Tom Shoop is the former editor in chief at GovExec, which produces publications serviing public sector managers and executives.

 

Tom is a former member of the Fairfax County History Commission, whose mission is to identify, document, record and preserve the county's historic past.

He has written extensively about government at all levels and various historical periods, and is a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration.

​

In 2023, he became an independent writer and historian. His first book, A Place Called Ilda: Race and Resilience at a Northern Virginia Crossroads, was published by the University of Virginia Press in 2024. 

​

Tom lives in Richmond, Virginia with his wife Julie.
